No 6 at Padstow

I have just been to Padstow, North Cornwall, for a few days and stayed at the Old Custom House on the Quay with views to die for.

Padstow is a foodie heaven.

Another lovely place is Port Isaac which is not far away by car  In the mid 19th Century it was an active harbour where cargoes like stone, coal, timber and pottery were loaded and unloaded.

I also visited the Levant mine and Beam engine.  It is a National Trust property near St Just. Copper and tin were mined for generations and apparently Levant extends over a mile out under the sea bed.  In 1919 the main engine suffered a failure killing 31 men and then in 1930 the mine closed.

In Padstow I visited Prideaux Place, a 400 year old family owned Elizabethan manor which has been used for many movie locations.

Back to why I came to Padstow for the food – Paul Ainsworth at No.6 is a great chef and the food was lovely.  He worked for Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing.  In 2011 he appeared on the BBC series the Great British Menu where he won the regional heats representing the South West with a dessert called The Taste of the Fairground.  It was superb.

He is considered to be one of the best chefs in Britain and I agree.  I started with crisp Porthilly oysters, cured pork, green apple and fennel.  For mains I had Duck in clear Peking Tea and Pyo salad and obviously the Taste of the Fairground dessert – just to die for!

I met Paul and had a photo taken with him and met his team, a great bunch of talented guys.

That was a great dining experience.

While I was in the restaurant I noticed the beautiful glass tea light holders on the tables and found out they were by Jo Downs, who is a designer of hand made glass ornaments and murals, and one of the world’s most respected fused glass designers.  I just had to visit her studio at Launceston and yes, I bought the candle holders.

Another great restaurant and fishmonger is Prawn on the Lawn.  It is only a 16 seater restaurant serving tapas style fish dishes.  I had squid, ray wing, hake and tiger prawns.  Another great night. Padstow is very special.
