Broadway comes to London

I have just been to see An American in Paris at the Dominion Theatre starring Leanne Cope as Lise Dassin and Robert Fairchild as Jerry Mulligan.

The music is by George Gershwin.  About 15 yeas go when I was in New York I visited a hotel that had the original Gershwin piano in it.  I can’t play, but the hotel was kind enough to let me have a photo taken at his piano looking as if I was playing it.  George Gershwin was one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century.

The original 1951 film starred Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron and went on to win six Oscars.  The music is so good – It’s Wonderful, I’ve got Rhythm, I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise.  But my two favourite numbers are You Can’t Take That Away From Me and An American in Paris.

The setting is Paris 1945 at the end of the second World War – a GI pursues his dream to make it as  a painter in Paris.

The costumes were magic, I love the 40s clothes, the cut and style and elegance. Christopher Wheeldon’s work as director and choreographer is first class.

I loved it so much I have booked to go again to see it.  I don’t see shows twice, this is a first for me.

A spectacular production, a masterpiece of theatrical dance.  It is from the glittering era of the big Broadway musicals.
