Highclere Castle

I went to Highclere Castle. It is a Grade 1 Listed country house built in 1679 and largely renovated in the 1840s. The estate is in Highclere in Hampshire and is the country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon. There are various follies around the estate and very large gardens.

In November 1922 the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter stood outside a sealed door in the Valley of Kings in Egypt. After many years of excavation work the pair had discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun. The discovery was the first world media event and has given a legacy of knowledge and insight into a remarkable civilisation. There is a fascinating collection of Egyptian artifacts in the basement of the castle.

Highclere was used in the TV drama Downton Abbey and so attracts visitors from all over the world. They used the Great Hall, Dining Hall, Music Room and Drawing Room but it has been used as a location for a number of other films and television dramas.

Highclere is worth a visit but there are limited openings throughout the year.
