Castle Howard

Castle Howard is a stately home in North Yorkshire. It has been the home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than 20 years. The house is familiar to a lot of people through the many television shows and films made here including Brideshead Revisited.

Building of the castle began in 1699 and took over 100 years to complete. It is one of the largest country houses in England with a total of 145 rooms and was first opened to the public in 1999. There is a lovely fountain in the front grounds called The Atlas Fountain.

In the great hall the dome was recreated in 1961 after the fire in 1940 and it was painted by Scott Ackermann Medd. Well worth a visit although I was disappointed to find not many rooms open to the public, considering its size.
